Act I: The Five O’Clock Pouring (The Incident)
The rain over Mayfair didn’t just fall; it felt like a targeted smear campaign by the Met Office.
Inside the drawing-room of Mayfair Manor, the air was a suffocating blend of Le Labo Santal 33, damp upholstery, and generational wealth.
This was the natural habitat of the London Misfits, people who possessed flawless Mayfair manners but harboured absolute Soho sins.
They were the type of crowd who would judge your typography choice on a pitch deck but completely look the other way if you laundered money through a boutique fitness startup in Shoreditch.
In the center of the room, slumped in a mid-century velvet armchair that cost more than a rookie detective’s annual pension, was Lord Harrington.
He was dead. Extremely dead.
His eyes were wide, staring blankly at the ornate crown molding. At his feet lay the shattered, weeping remains of a delicate porcelain teacup.
Detective Jack Steele stood by the grand fireplace, looking like a man who bought his suits from an estate sale in Croydon.
He adjusted his rumpled coat and looked at his rookie partner, who was frantically scrolling through a Notion template on an iPad.
"Alright, give me the timeline," Jack said, his voice cutting through the soft, anxious clinking of silver spoons.
"The tea was poured at exactly five o'clock, sir," the rookie whispered, keeping his eyes on his screen. "According to the staff, it was a perfectly civilised affair. They were literally debating whether the new algorithm update on TikTok was ruining the aesthetic of independent fashion labels."
"And then?"
"At exactly six o'clock, absolute chaos erupted. Lord Harrington took one last sip of his Earl Grey, muttered something about his cryptocurrency portfolio crashing, and collapsed. The family immediately went into a panic."
Jack looked around the room at the grieving heirs. None of them were actually crying. One of them was quietly updating their LinkedIn status to 'Managing Director (Incoming)'.
"Look at them," Jack muttered, crossing his arms. "Polished on the surface. They know how to hold a salad fork, and they definitely know the entry requirements for every private member's club from here to West Hollywood. But the poison is in the details."
He walked over to the silver tea tray. The porcelain pot sat there, looking completely innocent. The silhouette kept things looking respectable, but Jack knew better. In this house, impeccable manners and questionable intentions didn't just coexist; they went out for drinks together at three in the morning.
"Someone spiked the brew," Jack said, picking up a heavy, 200 gsm linen napkin to wipe his brow. "And whoever did it knew exactly how to blend into the background of a polite little box while planning total anarchy."
